I have heard that I can add any
fish to my pond because fish grow to the size of their
environment. Is this true?
Contrary to very popular
belief, fish do not grow to the size of the
pond in which they are kept. When fish have outgrown their
pond they become stressed.
This is much like if we were to keep a puppy in a box for
its entire life. It would not have room to properly move
around and exercise. As a result, it would be extremely
stressed.Stressed animals
are very susceptible to disease and they often become
aggressive towards other animals that are around them.
Additionally, if one fish in the pond is stressed and a
parasitic, viral, fungal, or bacterial infection sets in, it
can spread easily to the other fish in the pond and kill
them. One should also consider the extra cost of medication
to cure the sick fish.
Please let the NorthSide Aquatics staff help recommend fish
that are appropriate to the size pond that you have.
As a general guideline, Koi reach 3'+ when fully grown and
can live up to a hundred years. They require 1000
gallons of water each! Koi are very agile swimmers and
need long runs of swimming room to be happy. Goldfish, on
the other hand are more content to hang out in a smaller
area, provided that they have good filtration.
