What is the best size aquarium?
This is a tricky question
to answer because it depends on a lot of factors. Here
are some things to consider:
1. Larger water volumes are more stable than smaller
water volumes. This means if something goes wrong, it
happens faster in a smaller aquarium.
2. Fish do not grow to the
size of their environment. If they become too big for
their tank, they will become stressed and either become
prone to disease or die. It is important to
consider the needs of the fish you wish to keep before
purchasing the aquarium. NorthSide Aquatics recommends
having the correct size aquarium from the outset.
Don't assume that you will get another aquarium later.
Fish can grow quickly and it is easy to lose track of time.
3. Reef aquaria are often
easiest to set up and keep if they are around 75 gallons.
Having a drilled aquarium with sump is very helpful because
it allows for much of the filtration equipment to reside
below the main aquarium out of sight. It is also
easier to maintain because the overflow helps to pull
detritus (dust-like waste) down to the sump so that it can
be extracted from the environment.
